The OVCEF School-to-Apprentice program is a unique program that allows vocational school seniors to begin a career in their desired construction trade as a registered apprentice during their senior year. Students in the program receive both textbook education and hands-on training working for construction companies representing their field of interest.
During their junior year at the vocational school, the student must currently have and/or maintain:
- 2.5 grade point average while passing all enrolled classes
- 95% attendance record
- Reliable transportation
- Meet minimum skill competency
- Parental support
- Recommendation by current instructors
- A commitment to the full length of their chosen trade program
While in high school:
students alternate two weeks of on-the-job training and two weeks of classroom time.
Upon graduation from high school:
the student may be eligible to receive a 2nd year apprentice status upon enrollment in the apprenticeship program.
OVCEF has received national recognition for its successful operation of the STA program.
Employers who want to participate in the program can contact their local vocational school, request information on the students, and set up a formal interview with potential students.
After the completion of a successful interview, the student will be in a probationary program during the summer of their junior year prior to entering the STA program.
Following the probationary program, the student can be indentured into a formal apprenticeship program.
This is truly a benefit to employers because this allows an employer to select the “best of the best” for potential employment. These students have proven to be more productive, motivational, and valuable long-term employees. These students cannot be placed with anyone that does not formally register apprentices.
